The Tempest
by William Shakespeare
2016 is a major Shakespeare year, celebrating 400 years since England's greatest dramatist 'shuffled off this mortal coil'. It is thus most appropriate that the Parlement of Foules, Bremen University's English-language drama group, is marking the start of this tremendous year with performances of Shakespeare's last complete play, "The Tempest" - and, given the state of the world at the start of 2016, perhaps only too appropriate that it should be "The Tempest" that we are playing, with its focuses on power play and politics, on rightful and unrightful rule and misrule, on honesty and deceit, loyalty and betrayal, good vs. evil - but also on the purity of love and the way in which love can heal, can bring about forgiveness of even the blackest deeds.
True to winter form, the Parlement of Foules presents "The Tempest" in stripped fashion, pared down to a fast-moving play of two thirds the original length, underpinned by musical 'spirits', as the various strands running through Shakespeare's work are drawn together to produce a powerful, moving epilogue, a monument to the man who revolutionized European theatre.
